Holistic and natural approach to seasonal allergies

Sneezing, congestion, watery eyes, brain fog… sound familiar? For many, seasonal allergies are an annual struggle that can make spring and fall feel less like a fresh start and more like a foggy, miserable slog.

While conventional medicine often focuses on suppressing symptoms, Ayurveda invites us to look deeper—to strengthen our body’s resilience, address imbalances, and work with nature, instead of feeling like it is out to get us!

Let’s explore how Ayurveda views seasonal allergies and how it can help you breathe easier.

🌱 Ayurveda’s Natural View of Seasonal Allergies

In Ayurveda, seasonal allergies are seen as the result of an imbalance in one of the doshas. The doshas are dominate energy types, and we all have a little all of three. Curious to learn more? Take my free dosha quiz!

  • Kapha imbalance → excess mucus, heaviness, congestion, sinus focused symptoms, sluggishness, water retetnion, craving sweets, carbs, or heavy foods

    • In spring (Kapha season), the cool, damp environment can cause Kapha to accumulate — leading to excess mucus, sluggishness, and congestion.

  • Pitta imbalance → redness, inflammation, heat, upset eyes, burning, skin irritation, irritability

    • Can surface potentially in spring as temperatures start to warm and pitta (fire element) starts to increase

    • Also in fall, when summer (pitta season) has led to an accumulation of pitta all season long

  • Vata imbalance → dryness in throat or eyes, irritation, sneezing, tickly cough,  sleep disturbances, anxiety, ungroundedness

    • In Fall (vata season), cold, dry, rough, qualities abound and may build up in excess in the body

  • Weak agni (digestive fire) → accumulation of toxins (ama) that clog channels and weaken immunity. Thick coating on the tongue in the morning, brain fog, joint pain, body odor.

🍃 Common Triggers for Seasonal Allergies According to Ayurveda "Rather than seeing allergies as an external attack, Ayurveda sees them as a sign the body’s inner defenses and elimination systems are struggling to adapt to seasonal shifts."

✅ Cold, heavy, damp foods in spring (think: dairy, wheat, sugar) that build more mucus (more kapha type allergies) ✅ Irregular routines (eating at different times everyday, lack of consistent bedtime) that confuse the body’s rhythms (more vata type allergies) ✅ Not adjusting diet + habits with the seasons- this is one of the tenants of using Ayurveda’s wisdom- letting nature the guide the way for how we nourish ourselves. ✅ Low digestive fire leading to ama (undigested residues that clog and irritate)

🌼 Natural Approach to Managing Allergies

Simple tips:

  • Start your day with warm water + lemon (for vata/kapha) or lime (for pitta), to trigger a bowel movement and support digestion. This keeps the channels of the body clear, open, and moving to prevent stagnation and build up that can result in bad allergies.

  • Eat light, warm, spiced foods (ginger, turmeric, black pepper), appropriate for the season.

  • Reduce dairy, sugar, and heavy cold foods in spring allergy season, especially if you struggle with kapha type allergies.

  • Try nasya: a drop of warm sesame oil or herbal oil in each nostril in the morning

Herbs that may support allergy relief:

  • Turmeric — natural anti-inflammatory, helpful for all 3 doshas

  • Trikatu (ginger, black pepper, pippali) — clears channels and best for congestion and kapha type allergies

  • Tulsi (holy basil) — supports respiratory health
